Honnavar Port at Kasarkod-Tonka near Honnavar, Karnataka, is being built on a narrow sandspit where River Sharavati meets the Arabian Sea, a biodiversity-rich coastal zone. This private port is changing an entire coastline.

The port area is a part of Sharavati estuary, home to diverse fish and mangrove habitats. Olive Ridley Turtles, a protected species, have been recorded nestling on the same beach.

A four-kilometer, four-lane high road that would connect the port to the NH66 cuts through human settlements of five villages. Threatening local fishing and women’s fish-drying occupations.

The Honnavar Port Development is a CHOICE between:
• ecology & logistics
• livelihoods & national infrastructure ambition
• local economy, global economy & sustainability.

Core Investigative Questions

  1. What are the socio-economic impacts & mental health implications for traditional fisherfolk (men, women & families) whose homes & fish drying fields are marked for demolition & erasure?
  2. Is there a just rehabilitation package for them?
  3. Is there a long-term sustainable solution that is ecologically & socio-economically justifiable?

Field Literacy Lab invites Graduate & Post-Graduate Students to do an objective SIA Fieldwork.

Not as observers, but as learning investigators.
